Posterior Cervical Fusion Surgery

The neck or cervical spine area requires stability for protection of the spine and to prevent many types of neck pain. When the cervical vertebrae need stability, surgery may be required to connect two or more vertebrae. Posterior cervical fusion surgery can use bone grafting to fuse the vertebra together, creating a stable spine and neck. Our experienced team of spinal specialists at McKinley Orthopedics, Sports Medicine, and Spine, can perform complex spine surgeries to alleviate pain and prevent further damage, including posterior cervical fusion surgery.

Fusion surgery in the neck can be used for treating neck pain that is caused by movement of the neck vertebrae. It can also be used to prevent further deformities in the cervical spine or to protect the spinal cord. The surgery is performed through an incision in the back of the neck, accessing the cervical spine. In most cases, bone grafting and/or instrumentation is used to fuse the vertebrae together. As the two vertebrae heal, they become one piece of bone, creating stability in the neck.

Posterior Cervical Decompression Microdiscectomy

When there is cervical disc degeneration or herniated discs in the neck, there can be decompression of the spinal cord or nerves. When conservative treatments are not effective, posterior cervical decompression microdiscectomy is one of the options our surgeon at McKinley Orthopedics, Sports Medicine, and Spine, may recommend for relief. This surgery accesses the cervical spine from the back or posterior position. Posterior microdiscectomy can be preferred in some cases as spinal fusion is not needed as in many anterior microdiscectomy procedures.
