Dr. Carey is board-certified in Orthopedic Surgery. Make sure your surgeon is board-certified at www.abos.org/verify-certification.

Dr. Carey attended medical school at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM). He completed his orthopedic residency through the United States Army at Dwight D. Eisenhower Army Medical Center at Fort Gordon, GA. Dr. Carey also studied pediatric surgery at Scottish Rite Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia, and orthopedic trauma at the University of South Carolina during that time.

After residency, Dr. Carey served as an orthopedic surgeon in Afghanistan. During his overseas tour, he was promoted to Major in the United States Army. When he returned, he was stationed at Fort Riley and became the Chairman of Orthopedic Surgery at Irwin Army Community Hospital. He finished his military career over the next four years and, in 2016, moved to Alaska to start McKinley Orthopedic and Sports Medicine. Within his first year in Fairbanks, Dr. Carey was elected the Chairman of the Orthopedic Department at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital, leading the way in bringing innovation to Fairbanks.

Here at McKinley Orthopedic and Sports Medicine, Dr. Carey enjoys seeing patients of all ages for nonoperative and operative orthopedic care. He performs in-office procedures such as joint, muscular, nerve, and Xiaflex injections and Mi-Eye in office scopes. He enjoys total joint replacements, hip, knee, shoulder, ankle, and wrist arthroscopy and cartilage restoration procedures.

Dr. Carey feels that continuing medical education is essential in orthopedic surgery and prides himself on bringing cutting-edge orthopedic procedures to Fairbanks. He started a monthly journal club to help continue orthopedic education for himself and the entire Fairbanks orthopedic community. In addition, he attends at least three hands-on conferences per year to continue to update his operating skills. He is the only orthopedic surgeon performing All Arthroscopic Rotator Cuff Repairs, CT Guided Shoulder Replacement Surgery, Hip Arthroscopy (Labral Repairs, FAI Surgery and Cartilage Restoration), and Computer Navigated Total Hip Replacements (Anterior and Posterior Approach).

Outside of work Dr. Carey enjoys spending time with his family and traveling. He enjoys teaching at the university level in Greece and China. He also enjoys volunteering, including medical services in Mombasa, Kenya. Here in Alaska, he is a true outdoorsman and enjoys hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, and skiing. When time allows, he also likes returning to the rugby field. Dr. Carey played rugby at St. Joseph’s University and PCOM while in school and for the 23 and under USA and US Army rugby teams. He remains a St. Joseph’s University rugby and basketball fan and enjoys living an active lifestyle.
